Residents are being invited to help shape proposals for a new community space in Poundbury.

The Duchy of Cornwall is bringing forward plans to convert Jubilee Hall into a 'practical and viable' community space for the people of Dorchester.

Before the plans are drawn up, the community will be consulted on how best they think Jubilee Hall could be used, and are invited to consider alternative options for community spaces in Poundbury and the vicinity.

A drop-in consultation event to show potential opportunities for the space and listen to community feedback will be held on Tuesday, May 1 at the Jubilee Hall in Queen Mother Square.

Anyone who has questions or would like to have their say on the future of the building is invited to drop-in anytime between 2pm and 8pm.

Ben Murphy, estates director of the Duchy of Cornwall said: "The Jubilee Hall is in an excellent location but currently sits unused. There are lots of exciting opportunities for how this space could be enjoyed, and we would like to hear from local people how best to utilise it, so that it is of benefit to everyone.

“Some potential options include a community hall, a venue for hire, a visitor centre with gift shop and/or café, or a mixture of these uses. However, we want the plans for the hall to be shaped by those who will be using it, so we’re holding a public consultation to help influence the plans.

“As part of the consultation we are keen to establish which community groups and organisations would be interested in operating the facility. If there is a commitment from local groups or businesses to help manage and run the venue, there will be greater scope and opportunity to include a variety of facilities.

“It is important local people are able to input into improving facilities and the Jubilee Hall consultation presents a fantastic opportunity to influence where you live. I hope you can join us at our public event to have your say.”

William Gibbons, chairman of the Poundbury Residents Association (PRA) said: “The Poundbury Residents Association is delighted the Duchy of Cornwall is consulting on the need for a community hall.

"The Jubilee Hall is currently unused and is a very good option to be fitted out, whether it be a hall or another community asset. The Duchy’s recent consultation for new facilities on The Great Field was an excellent example of how the views of the community were truly listened to, and we do encourage all residents to fully participate in this consultation and have their say.”

Based on the consultation feedback received, the Duchy of Cornwall and a locally sourced architect will develop a planning application for the fit out and reuse of the building, to be submitted to West Dorset District Council in due course.
