This year, for the first time, I was in London watching the marathon on Sunday when a thought crossed my mind.
For as well as the participating 41,000 runners, there was an army of people representing countless charities who were there to offer support for those who were running for the respective chosen charities.
So on one hand, I viewed it as a happy day for the runners and supporters who were there for the event; while conversely, I thought how sad it is that so many people in life - sufferers from illnesses and those in hardship - are in need of the vital funds raised as a result of events such as the London Marathon.
On a smaller scale, of course, there are always fund-raising initiatives taking place throughout the year and I wonder where we would be without them.
