FUNDRAISERS from Melcombe Regis Rotary Club have been awarded a silver certificate for donating enough money to purchase 50 Shelterboxes.

The Shelterbox charity gave the club the honour after previously awarding it a bronze certificate.

Ian Brooke, of Melcombe Regis Rotary Club, said: “This award really belongs to the people of Weymouth who so readily put their hard earned money in our collecting boxes. “Without them, we could do nothing so I would like to say thank you Weymouth for your generosity to people you will probably never meet.”

The club received the bronze certificate for donating enough money to purchase 25 Shelterboxes. Shelterbox is a Rotary charity which provides shelter and dignity to people who have lost everything in a natural or manmade disaster.

It sends boxes containing a tent, blankets, cooking utensils and basic tools to families in areas affected by floods, earthquakes or even wars.

Beer festival’s £650 donation is the toast of Alzheimer fund

BEER festival organisers handed over a cheque for £650 to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dorchester’s Beerex organisers make several donations to community groups throughout the year and more will be announced.

The annual event at the Corn Exchange, which is always usually a sell-out, is a collaboration between Dorchester Round Table and the West Dorset Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).

Chairman of Beerex 2012 Ben King presented a cheque for the money to the charity.

Fellow committee member Rich Gabe said: “We are delighted to be supporting a charity which supports individuals and their carers who are affected by dementia – an illness that almost everyone will at some time be affected by, either as an individual, a family member or friends.”

Derek Dodds, locality manager in Dorset and Somerset for the Alzheimer’s Society said the money would be spent on local projects.

He said: “The Alzheimer’s Society is delighted to accept this cheque for £650 on behalf of people effected by dementia in Dorset.”
