RESIDENTS are being urged to be on their guard after an energy saving scam hit Dorset.

Dorset County Council says a number of people have been victims of cold callers selling energy devices that they promise will save money.

Some of the devices have been found to pose a fire risk.

Ivan Hancock, Dorset County Council trading services manager, said: “These unscrupulous businesses appear to be operating a scam, from outside the UK, by targeting older people who may be attracted by any solution to rising energy costs.”

He added: “We advise consumers against buying goods or services over the phone as a result of a cold call and to avoid the use of money transfer services, unless they are sending money to a relative or friend, as these payments are not traceable.”

The sellers claim to be working with the energy supplier and offer the device at a price of £99. When it is plugged in, residents are told, it will automatically save them 40 per cent from their energy bills.

But once purchased, the devices do not work.

The council also says that some of the original victims have been contacted again by someone claiming to be from a claims management company, who promise up to £3,000 in compensation if they first purchase a voucher.

The council advises anyone who has responded to these calls to contact the Citizens Advice consumer service on 08454 040506 or Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.org.uk

They should also contact their banks to stop any payments and dispose of the device carefully.
