I would like to put the record straight on your report (April 12) about the closure of the council's cash office at North Quay.

According to Colin Huckle the first that councillors knew about it was when some members of the public received a letter a few days ago.

Actually the decision was taken a couple of years ago at a meeting of the full council where not a single councillor, including from Labour, voted against it happening.

Since then a lot of work has been done to find alternatives so that residents without bank accounts or access to the internet wouldn’t be at a disadvantage. Over the end of last year these proposals were out for consultation. At the time all councilllors were invited and encouraged to take part.

So you have a choice between two scenarios. Did Cllr Huckle’s Labour colleagues really know nothing about the change despite having voted for it? Did they remain in the dark even after a full consultation? Or is Colin Huckle’s ‘story’ total fiction?

He really can’t have it both ways.

Cllr John Birtwistle, Nothe Parade, Weymouth
