If I could cast readers’ minds back to ‘Have your say’ of Friday, July 18 regarding the question of whether the lycra-clad individuals cycling along the bypass between Weymouth and Morrison’s roundabout are too good for the cycle paths?

Mr Wellman is quite correct: This area now sports a truly magnificent path network.

They are very welcome and well used by cyclists, pedestrians and mobility scooter users alike.

However, these paths are alternative byways not compulsory routes. In truth, a cyclist, or pedestrian, may use all of our highway network unless, as in motorways, the law specifically forbids it.

We must be clear… not using the shared footpath or cycleway means no offence, causes no harm and breaks no rules.

On every other road all users must be constantly open to encountering anything from girls in pink tabards on ponies, to blue boiler suited men atop steam engines.
