Mr Heinrich is of course correct (Echo letters) when he says that cyclists can use the dedicated cycle paths (or not) as they please.

However, he is badly mistaken in thinking that this action does not cause offence. Cyclists using the busy roads cause endless frustration for drivers of vehicles especially large lorries and buses. And that frustration is compounded by cyclists using the road within yards of a dedicated cycle path.

It seems perverse of cyclists to use a dangerous road where a safe track is provided for them. For example, it is common to see cyclists on the Preston Beach road where there is a dedicated cycle track as well as the sea wall promenade, where they are licensed to terrorise pedestrians.

A year or so ago I asked the then mayor why cyclists using the promenade in defiance of the ‘no cycling’ signs were not prosecuted. He replied that it was up to the police, whereas the police say they provide the names of cyclists stopped on the Esplanade to the Borough and it is up to them to prosecute. Who is right? And, in any case, why are not more cyclists stopped when they illegally use the pavements and the Esplanade, and why are they not prosecuted by whoever has that responsibility?
