Weymouth and Portland Borough Council still intend to sell-off the Greenhill chalets and associated recreational facilities potentially to an unknown business or private developer.

Once again our council shows no respect for a local asset that has served the public well for decades, safely in public hands.

The move to put our public assets out to tender risks seeing areas of Weymouth & Portland becoming closed off to the public, or, worse still, not developed at all and allowed to simply deteriorate.

Cllr Colin Huckle was quoted in the Echo describing the facilities as ‘a prime spot on our seafront and are a popular attraction for both residents and visitors’, consequently his support for selling the chalets and other facilities is even more bewildering as the danger of the area being closed to the general public, or prices being hiked by a private business is evident.

Worryingly, this could restrict many locals and especially young people from being able to afford spending any time here.

An Echo letter by Jane Burnet (You Say, September 6) explained the need to deliver a variety of local recreational, cultural and music events in Weymouth, and she has spoken out enthusiastically in favour of keeping this area publicly owned, one reason being because they provide a perfect location for a variety of potential events in Weymouth.

As we look to rejuvenate our town surely we must first start with maintaining our most valuable features, that are just one of many things that help our local economy thrive, and not looking for a cheap buck.
