Thanks to some very generous sponsorship [in the form of one and a half tons of best crushed stone] from Portland Stone Limited, members of the Portland Seafarers Support Group have restored the grave of the seamen lost in the Avalanche/Forest tragedy of 1877. The grave had become badly overgrown and in tidying up it became clear that only twenty years after the six seamen were interred the grave was neglected with spoil from a neighbouring grave tipped over it.
For those wishing to visit the grave, it is at the southern end of St Georges churchyard, Portland, below a prominent yellow leaved tree.
