Last Friday, October 31 I was driving my ageing MGB GT around the Dorchester area. On this occasion the carburettor overheated in the almost stationary traffic, causing the fuel to vaporise and the engine to stop.

Good Samaritans, in the form of young men travelling with their other halves, came to my rescue. Unfortunately I was in such an agitated state that I omitted to ask their names. Please would would you publish this letter in the hopes that they may see it and understand how grateful I was for their assistance.

Such kindness restores one’s faith in human nature.
