I read the missive from Richard Denton-White (Letters, November 29) with a degree of excitement and a small measure of bewilderment. It is all very well stating the obvious – that privatisation and greed is the motivation for the loss of what was the original Weymouth Post Office and so on.

But surely, he must agree that the whole idea of private wealth, and its ultimate aim, is to corral the entire private commons – the railways is just one example – for capital gain. Besides, we currently live in an era of ongoing capitalist growth – wealth enhancement, where nothing is beyond the grasp of those who wish to exploit it for personal gain.

Economic growth is now a mantra, something that for those who embrace it, appear to be in denial that we live on a finite world where growth and wealth enhancement cannot be sustained forever.

But while Mr Denton-White demonstrates a compassion for a return to common sense – that economics is not just about pounds, shillings and pence, nothing is ever going to change without an acceptance that wealth and ‘economic growth’ is merely an excuse for a few to get rich whilst the rest of us get poorer.
