A very well deserved MBE for John Hegarty. It is not only youngsters that he inspired.

I was lucky enough to go on one of the Outward Bound weekends for parents with him in 1988 to the Brecon Beacons.

I’ll never forget the fun of crawling through wet caves in semi-darkness, riding horses, whose hooves slipped on the metalled roads, not to mention sleeping three ladies (one who snored) in a two-man tent.

There was much more to experience on that weekend, so thanks, Mr Hegarty, for a few days that I will always remember.
