MAY I via attempt to get a message across to the lady who was riding her bicycle down Portland Road on the pavement at was a totally dangerous speed on Tuesday evening.

She passedt within inches of me as I was about to step out of my driveway onto the pavement. A fraction of a second differenceearlier would have had severe repercussions for both of us.

I estimated her speed as between 15 and 20 mph. , s She probably didn't even notice I was there as she deliberately rode close to the garden walls. Being hit by an adult and their machine at that speed would cause serious injury to anyone of any age.

Why is it that cyclists can be so aggressively defensive when it comes to their being put at risk by car drivers but feel it fine to ignore rules designed to protect pedestrians? Every driveway is a junction. Had I driven out with my car, even with the due caution that I always employ, she would have been over my bonnet and no doubt the cycling mafia would be calling for me to be hanged, drawn and quartered .

I expect she had urgent business or even didn't want to get her hair wet – obviously more important than others around her .

If she reads this I will accept her apology, even if it's anonymous, but I suspect she doesn't have the moral fibre even for that!

Pavements are for people, not cyclists.
