I WRITE regarding your recent article celebrating the 13 new jobs that will be provided now that Sports Direct are filling the empty shop in Jubilee Retail Park.
Of course, new businesses arriving in our town should be encouraged.
However, this particular company employs people on zero-hour contracts and a quick search of the job vacancies on their website shows that this is also true of the new Weymouth store.
Our town already struggles with low-paid and seasonal employment, leaving many local people struggling to pay their rent and bills. Zero-hour contracts leave people not knowing how many hours they will work from one week to the next.
Although this can be beneficial for some people, these jobs are often filled by people who would rather be working regular hours due to a lack of other opportunities.
We want new businesses to feel welcome in Weymouth but we also want businesses who pay their employees a decent wage under fair conditions.
Unfortunately, I fear that in Cameron's Britain that is too much to hope for.
