WHEN I was a young boy I was lucky enough to live in a huge house overlooking the cliffs at Grove Point, on the Isle of Portland.
Many hours spent watching the herring gulls building nests, raising their young , marvelling at their flying skills, and watching them fish, yes fish.
At one time not too long ago we had fish off our shores but when you have trawlers pulling in nets of mackerel at 400 tonnes at a time, and tracking the shoals by satellite, what is left for the poor seagull?
Go to the cliffs at Grove Point. What was once a thriving community is now deserted with just a few fulmars and kittiwakes there.
No wonder they have moved inland where there is easy food to be found. Here’s an idea: let’s stop catching all the fish and maybe they will go back to where they belong.
