THE government-appointed inspector has now published his findings on the Local Plan.

Regarding St. Michael’s Trading Estate, he finds “regeneration of the trading estate is necessary to secure its future and ignoring the condition of the buildings is likely to jeopardise the future of the site. Incorporating some residential use appears to be a realistic and modest option which is capable of funding improvements while retaining the inherent character of the estate”.

With English Heritage happy with Haywards’ proposals for the refurbishment of the Lilliput Building (the only building on the estate listed), it appears all the obstacles, presented at and since a resolution was passed in June 2012 to grant planning permission, have been overcome!

I, therefore, see no possible reason why the West Dorset District Council which, incidentally, back in 2000 was encouraging Haywards to bring forward plans to regenerate the South West Quadrant, should not now grant planning permission.

Every moment of delay has put Haywards to unnecessary time and expense, time and money which could be put to carrying out the works in the refurbishment of the St. Michael’s Trading Estate.

The regeneration of the trading estate can do a number of things. Firstly, it can stimulate the town’s economy.

Secondly, and importantly, provide much-needed affordable housing for our young people.

Thirdly, upgrade and improve its tenants’ place of work and, fourthly, expand and encourage additional businesses into the town.

Come on West Dorset District Council pull your finger out so that the plans you required in 2000 can be implemented to everyone’s benefit!
