I have read with interest all the letters over many weeks about dogs and their owners and feel I should write on behalf of all responsible dog owners, who I believe are by far the majority.
My dog Freddie, an unusual and very unofficial cross between a Golden Cocker Spaniel and an Afghan Hound, is well known in and around the town. He is friendly and social dog and I get to chat to many other dog walkers.
I am lucky to have a big family but I meet many owners for whom the dog is very much a treasured companion.
I also meet and chat with many, mainly elderly and some I am sure lonely people who have recently lost their dogs, feel they are unable to take on another and are clearly delighted to meet Freddie, talk to him and stroke him.
I particularly remember one couple with a disabled young lady in a wheelchair who were very grateful I had taken the time to help her through the day.
My wife and I usually walk Freddie around the market on Saturdays meeting and chatting to lots of people. So 'name and address supplied' if you want to ban all dogs how about lively children on leads, people pushing three wheeled shopping trolleys or how about electric wheelchairs? No absolute nonsense!
We are fortunate to live in a happy and friendly town. Let's all be more considerate of others. Dogs play an essential role in the companionship of many people and it would be dreadful if they were banned as you say.
So whoever you are, if you meet us in town you may spot us but we won't s[pot you, stop and have a chat,. Freddie may be able to change your mind.
