What has happened to our one-time "friendly" mail service?

I am 81 and disabled, my wife is 75. Somebody is kind enough to send her a birthday card, but according to you, did not pay enough postage.

So now, we have to somehow get to your office, and not only pay the difference of 20p, but a fine (not our fault and cannot be recovered) of £1.

Time was when the mailman was "regular", knew his customers, and would knock on the door to collect such as short-payments; job done.

Is our great Royal British Mail so darned petty as to inconvenience – and fine – pensioners in this way?
