I HAVE some sympathy with Mr Walkden regarding the old rail tracks on the quay, they are slippery and dangerous for the unwary.

I think, however, to close the quay to vehicular traffic and lose the short term free parking there would not do the town any good and send a good many shoppers elsewhere. But why are cyclists so intransigent?

Mr Walkden suggests that walkers, push chairs and everyone else could share the Esplanade between the Sea Life Centre and the Pier Bandstand, in the wider part, possibly, but certainly not the part that fronts Greenhill Gardens, the beach huts and the Greenhill properties. There the Esplanade is far too narrow and in decent weather, even in the winter, is well-used and in the summer is crowded with pedestrians, including children and elderly folk and people outside their huts enjoying the sunshine, not to mention the land train!

Why do cyclists insist on riding through that section? Mr Walkden argues that it would be safe to share with "sensible cyclists", unfortunately there are too many of the stupid kind who want to ride as fast as possible, give no warning of their approach and even cycle no-handed along there.

If the road is too dangerous the solution is quite simple and not onerous; Mr Walkden get off your bike and walk!
