RECENTLY people have bemoaned the state of Bridport, in particular complaining about the weeds and grass growing on the town’s streets and also the litter.

Dorset County Council Highways and Bridport Town Council came under fire and their budgeting was questioned.

Both councils have their spending priorities and these may not always match those of the rest of us. However, if we agree that there isn’t an infinite supply of money, one way to make it go further would be for each of us to take responsibility for the area immediately around our property and make sure that is clean, tidy and weed-free.

It would take no longer than the time needed to write this letter than to wander round once a week and dispatch any weeds that dared to show their faces.

Those who are particularly public-spirited could follow the example the gentleman who lives in Jessopp Avenue and deal with areas that the councils have ignored.

He has kept much of the bottom part of Jessopp Avenue and Sea Road North neat and tidy for at least the past year and puts to shame others who can’t be bothered.

As for litter, it doesn’t magically appear. If we didn’t scatter it, it wouldn’t need to be cleared up.
