Weather latest: Heaviest snowfall in 17 years causes chaos across Dorset

Waking up to snow on Boscombe Spa Road
THE heaviest snowfall in 17 years is causing chaos across Dorset. A severe weather warning is in place, with snow forecast to continue throughout the day.
As much as six inches is thought to have fallen in some places overnight. Schools and side roads are closed but gritting teams have been operating all night in a bid to keep the road networks clear.
Rubbish collections have been cancelled across Dorset with binmen drafted in to help with gritting. Almost all schools in Dorset and Bournemouth and Poole are closed.
Compacted snow is causing problems on minor roads, with Bourne Valley Road in Branksome, Blandford Road North at Poole and Bozeley Hill at Cann all dangerous.
Dorset Police urged drivers to use extreme caution. Key roads in Bournemouth and Poole, including the Wallisdown Road and Wessex Way, remain slushy but passable. Check this list of passable with care roads.
Treacherous conditions forced police to close the road between Clouds Hill and Gallows Hill, near Bovington earlier, after two tank carriers became stranded at the side of the road due to sheet ice.
Services on South West trains have are now running as normal although there are some delays. Bournemouth Airport is closed until at least 8pm. Southampton has reopened but flights are disrupted.

Andy Pitt, managing director of South West Trains, said: "The freezing weather conditions are causing disruption to road, rail and air transport in many parts of the country, including train services on our network.
"We understand the impact this is having on our customers and would like to thank them for their patience during these difficult conditions."
In Bournemouth, Yellow Buses are terminating at Lansdowne. For Wilts and Dorset buses updates passengers are advised to check their Facebook page.
Bournemouth Uni have suspended all lectures but the library is staying open.
There is no rubbish collection in Bournemouth on Thursday or Friday and Millhams tip is closed today.
The Sandbanks ferry was due to start operating today but a ferry spokesman said: "The refit is now complete but due to the severe weather we are currently experiencing, we are not yet able to return the ferry to Poole and get back onto the chains.
"We will make plans to do this as soon as it is considered safe and practical for the operation to take place and will update you as soon as we have any further news.
In Poole, the first of the two Poole Schools Carol Concerts due to take place at the Lighthouse tonight has been cancelled. No adult learning classes in the town will go ahead today.
Refuse collections have been suspended due to the snow and were "unlikley" to take place at all today, said the council. All seven polling stations for the Old Town by-election in Poole are open.
In the Purbecks the district council have suspended all refuse and recycling collections, but officials are asking residents to leave their refuse out as services will restart as soon as possible.
Children's centres at Bovington, Wool, Wareham and Swanage are closed because of the adverse conditions.
In the New Forest, Sway was the worst hit with 6in. Beaulieu had 5in, Christchurch 3½in, Hordle 5in, Hyde 3in, Lymington 4½in, New Milton 4in, Ringwood 3½in and Verwood 3½in.
The white carpet covered all but the main roads which were salted by Hampshire County Council from 6pm Wednesday.
Wilts & Dorset cancelled buses to Brockenhurst College. Company divisional director Ed Wills said all services were cancelled in the Lymington area until mid-morning.
The X1 between Bournemouth and Lymington was operating later in the day, but not taking in unsalted minor roads, while the X3 Bournemouth to Salisbury route was operating, albeit slowly.

All the way home to Kinson and not a sign of anything. And I agree about the hills in Kinson - even at just after 11 last night they were lethal, and I'm not looking forward to leaving in an hour's time after snow has evidently fallen all night from what's outside my window.
I suppose our bins won't be emptied for three weeks again!

rd road,Christchurch bypass,all un gritted,roads are very slippery,so Christchurch council are no better,i meen we've had about 4-5 inches here,why cant they cope with it,we should all be given a months refund on our council tax,but it does look nice out there.

motorways in west yorkshire funny how people up here praise our efforts.
As an ex poole council gritter driver i can safely say they will be out all day/nite keeping MAJOR routes clear and as safe as possible. alot of resposability comes down to u the driving public PLEASE slow down try to avoid hill's where possible but the main think to ask ur self is DO I NEED TO TRAVEL IN THE CAR.

You cannot expect the gritters to get down the side roads in these conditions. The bus routes are the obvious priority.

I work at a Petrol station in Poole on the main Ringwood Road. From 10 o clock last night until 07.00 this morning, not one single gritting lorry passed our garage. There was at least 2 to 3 inches laying on this main road through Parkstone and Poole and cars were all over the place. Roads are used 24 hours a day not from 7am in the morning when the damage has already been done. There is no organisation from Poole council and it is an absolute shambles. People pay there council tax and road tax every year and they expect a little something back in return for there hard earned money. Because of the councils in this country cost cutting on the roads we are in this situation. It is great hearing how councils have bought more grit this year but it would help if they invested some money into buying the lorries that spread the **** stuff. The country just falls apart and makes us the laughing stock of the world because we have a few flakes of snow. Unbelievable

It's too easy to blame the councils. The main routes are all open and I got to work in Poole today without problem. However, I did see one dope in Wallisdown sail into a lampost, purely due to driving too fast in the conditions. You cannot expect the gritters to get down the side roads in these conditions. The bus routes are the obvious priority.

We all use the same old argument about how much council tax we pay and I agree with everyone, our council have always been quick enough to take our money, its a pity their not so quick when it comes to spending some of it.
As an ex Poole gritter driver you cant say that they will be out all day and night cause your not down here, so what you may think and what we know are two different things entirely.

All that can be done now is as the main routes turn to slush, and rolls away through drainage, the gritters continue to grit the roads to stop the forming of ice. Until then, if you do not have to drive, dont. We walked to work this morning. No problems.

’Unfortunately I have to travel from Poole to Portsmouth every day at the moment.
It was interesting to see that you give Blandford Rd (presumably Hamworthy) and the Broadstone Way (presumably the Relief Rd) a priority one for gritting.
This morning at 5.30 the Broadstone Way was packed snow. Similarly the Blandford Rd in Hamworthy was the same.
However the Blandford Rd after Sandy Lane was fine. Is this where the Purbeck council takes over?
I would be interested to know your comments on the above?’
This is the reply back from Barry Sparkes (Transportation Services Highways Co-ordinator), after seeking an answer to my questions THREE times. He said:
‘I do not have a specific answer as to the different conditions that you have identified only to say that both authorities apply the same amount of salt to the road conditions at the time and that we both receive our forecast from the same provider and are able to view each others intended actions to deal with the predicted forecasts
Over this period there were at times some very localised heavy snow storms which could have been a factor in this case.’
Therefore I must conclude that driving off of inches of slippery packed snow on to a gritted clear road has nothing to do with the Poole/Purbeck council boundary.
Indeed, I was just experiencing the result of a miraculous freak localised snowstorm condition that only takes place within the Poole Borough boundaries.

Unfortunately the health and safety jobsworths and the serial compensation freaks have now decided that if you do this simple task you leave yourself open the being sued through the courts if someone slips over on a pathway which you have cleared, is it any wonder why nobody will do anything to help others these days.

It began snowing in earnest at approx 22.50. By 23.15 the untreated roads had about 2inches of snow and in the next 10mins the treated roads were fighting a losing battle. Blame the gritters all you like, but at -2c and with the amount falling all the grit in the world would have struggled. After several hairy moments I chose to go home at approx 1am and in that time I saw several gritters valiantly trying to do their jobs.

If one wonders why there is no bin collection today and tomorrow, it is because the crews are being employed on the gritting as they were last year I beleive.

Which makes me think - is it 'legal' still to describe snowfall in Feet and Inches? Just wondering...

Yet again snow falls and the world shuts down Just as well some people dont live in scandinavia or russia or any country that has high snow falls during the winter,In these countries DO YOU SEE MASS HYSTERIA AND SCHOOL CLOSURES at the first sight of a snow flake the answer is NO

I awoke this morning to the snow just the same as everyone else so i made the decision to leave for work early
Yes the side roads where treacherous but all passable with caution but once you got onto the main artereal roads they where clear.It amazes me how people just sack it and cant be bothered to make the attempt to travel to work just because there is snow on the ground and as for those health and safety fools who close the schools as i said just as well as they dont live in scandinavia they would close the schools all winter maybe these people need to look at how our european neighbours deal with the snow

Since the schools are closed, now seems like the perfect time to prove they are worth the same by helping with the gritting, thereby the roads can be gritted AND the bins emptied.

here we go again blame the gritter's what a joke. we work all these hour's day and nite to make the roads safe for u.
and in return we have to read alot off messages on here slagging us off. I personally have been workin 12hr days/nights since last thursday gritting/ploughing the
motorways in west yorkshire funny how people up here praise our efforts.
As an ex poole council gritter driver i can safely say they will be out all day/nite keeping MAJOR routes clear and as safe as possible. alot of resposability comes down to u the driving public PLEASE slow down try to avoid hill's where possible but the main think to ask ur self is DO I NEED TO TRAVEL IN THE CAR.

I drove back from Verwood to Shaftesbury at 4 am this morning, and it's the first time I've ever used snow chains, but they did the job. There were foot high drifts above zig zag hill, and I got through them ok, with no sliding, or locking any wheels up at any time. They're a bit noisy on clear roads, but if you want to get somewhere they definetely do the job!

As per usual there was the biggest fuss in the South for a poxy 4 inches.
I have now come to the conclusion that the amount of snow fallen is inversely proportional to the amount of fuss made.
A lot of snow is usually when you open your door in the morning and you are met by a wall of snow and have to dig your way out.
Not because 4 inches fall's and you don't know how to drive your car or to bone idle to do a bit of self help and clear your paths.
