DORCHESTER 53 SUPERMARINE 15
DORCHESTER cruised to a Southern Counties South bonus-point victory in extremely difficult conditions at Coburg Road.
Considering the amount of rain that has fallen recently the pitch was in excellent condition but the continuous precipitation and stiff breeze made handling a lottery and the error count from both sides was high.
The visitors chose to play with the wind at their backs in the first period and took every opportunity to kick for field position.
From one such kick, Matt Read counter-attacked, broke through the defensive line and crossed under the posts for the opening try.
Quick hands from Shane Costigan put Rich Bament in for the second try and, with James Baker kicking both conversions, Dorchester turned around 14 points to the good.
With the benefit of the wind, the hosts raced in for four quick tries in the opening minutes of the second half.
James Newsam, Tom Bamlet and James Baker, with a brace, all added their names to the scoresheet.
Baker kicked two conversions and the contest was effectively over.
Unsurprisingly the hosts relaxed somewhat and the urgency appeared to leave their game.
However, credit must go to Supermarine who never gave up and, keeping the ball with their forwards, they threw themselves at the home defenders with great gusto.
Their deserved reward was three unconverted tries.
The county town side, for their part did add three more tries, Read, Bament and Newsam each scoring their second of the afternoon.
Dorchester have no fixture this weekend and must hope the weather improves before they travel to Trowbridge in two weeks’ time.
