A NEW venture is being launched next weekend to boost the opportunities for disabled people to go sailing in Weymouth and Portland.

Chesil Sailability, run by a small team of volunteers, has been inspired by the London 2012 Games and the world-class facilities of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA).

The volunteers will be working to enable people of all disabilities to get on the water, for a new experience or to progress and develop as sailors.

Portland Paralympic sailor Megan Pascoe, who is campaigning for Rio 2016, said: “I think that it is long overdue for a Sailability group in Weymouth and Portland.

“At the moment it is a long drive to reach a Sailability venue. Sailability makes a huge difference to disabled people’s lives and the infrastructure gained from this will greatly benefit the Paralympic legacy in Dorset.”

People with disabilities who would like to sail with the group are welcome to join, but enthusiastic volunteers are also needed in order to get and keep Chesil Sailability afloat in a variety of roles on the water and ashore.

Chairman Hugh de Iongh said: “If you would like to join Chesil Sailability as a sailor, volunteer or supporter, we’d love to hear from you.”

Come and meet the team at the WPNSA Outdoor Show on Saturday, March 30, from 10am to 4pm or email info@chesilsailability.org.uk
