BUDMOUTH College played host to the annual West Dorset PE Association High Five Netball rally.

Ten schools consisting of 14 teams took part in the competition.

The event was organised and run by sixth-form students, currently taking their BTEC level three in sport under the guidance of teacher Jo Ray.

Following a successful day of group games, St Andrew’s took top prize in the large schools competition with a 4-1 win over Radipole in the final.

The victors had reached the final after remaining unbeaten through the early stages of the large schools tournament.

The small schools honours were taken by St Augustine’s for the third year running. The fair play trophy, sponsored by Weymouth Rotary Club, was awarded to Conifers Primary School this year.

The event was able to involve young leaders in roles such as umpires, coaches, timekeepers and result table hosts.

The winning teams of both competitions then played each other.

St Augustine’s overcame St Andrew’s and therefore now go on to Canford School to represent South and West Dorset at the schools Winter Games. Head of the event, Jo Ray, spoke of the organisation skills shown and leadership qualities of her young team.

She said: “This was the first big event that the Year 12 BTEC students have run.

“It takes maturity and initiative to ensure the smooth running of such a tournament which they managed very well indeed. “We look forward to next year’s rally.”
