MOBY Dick’s Bears maintained their 100 per cent record in Division One of the Weymouth & District Evening League with victory over last season’s cup winners Saggies.

Kieron Womble (26) and Ben Doidge (26) got Saggies off to a solid start, but the introduction of Sami Rathnayake (4-9) heralded the start of a collapse as they slumped to 73 all out.

The Bears recovered from the early loss of George England as Jim Ryall (22), pictured right, and Laurie Whyte (11) mounted a recovery.

Mark Robinson (3-9) brought Saggies back into the game as he broke through the middle order, but Dave Trotter (18no) kept a cool head to see the Bears home by four wickets.

The Windowman Oval saw plenty of runs as PRT Chesil Beach Motors racked up 207-2 against Cosmos.

Elliott Sawyer hit an unbeaten 104, including 15 fours and three sixes, with able support from skipper Matt Randell (74) after the loss of Gary Randell, who was bowled with the first ball of the match.

Gary Randell was to atone for this lapse by taking 5-13 and, although Duncan McBean stood firm with 55 not out, he was left with too much to do as his side finished 107 runs behind.

In Division Two, Wessex Gasworks got their season off to a winning start by beating the Victoria Inn by 49 runs.

Scott Orchard’s 78 formed the basis of Gasworks’ innings, while James Dunham was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-6 from his four-over spell.

In reply, the Victoria were torn apart by Harry Tucker (4-4) and Derek Millen (3-12), with Fowler showing some resistance before falling just short of a deserved half-century on 46.

The Portland Arms recorded their second win of the year, against Budmouth at Reforne.

Batting first, the Arms posted 91-7 with Scott Males top-scoring with 28, while Neil Hardisty rolled back the years with a tidy 3-18.

Budmouth recovered from the early losses of Luke and Tierney as Bullock (27) and Morris (23) built a useful partnership.

A change of bowling saw Riley (2-15) and Locke (2-15) breakthrough and they took the game away from Budmouth, who ended 18 runs short.

The first round of the cup saw the Portland Arms continue their good form to knock out Division One’s Cosmos.

Cosmos set a challenging 140-5 from their 16 overs with Brian Keane (42) and Stuart Montgomery (57) on form before both were stumped by the lightning glove work of Dave Males.

Jan Davey led the Arms’ chase with a quick fire 72, supported by Tom Cole (27) and Pete Laming (35no).

Some tight bowling in the closing overs by Sallows (1-22) and Cruickshank (0-27) set up a tense finish, but the Arms won with five balls to spare.

In the other first round tie, PRT Chesil Beach Motors faced Budmouth.

The home side never recovered from the loss of Morley and Bullock and a procession of batsmen followed as the Portland bowlers ran amok.

An unbeaten partnership between Lawson (13no) and Hardisty (7no) gave Budmouth some hope as they closed on 78-8.

Portland were soon rocking on 18-3 with René Lawson proving almost unplayable, taking four wickets for just three runs.

It was left to Elliott Sawyer (41no) and Chris Theakstone (11no) to guide Triangle to a seven-wicket win.

However, this result was overturned as PRT fielded an ineligible player, so Budmouth will take their place in the quarters.
