WEYMOUTH striker Wayne Purser has issued a warning to the rest of Nationwide Confer-ence National by claiming "we can do better".

The ex-Peterborough United striker, who has netted five times in his last nine outings, reckons the Dorset outfit have done well so far in their first season back in non-League's top-flight but he is also confident that there is a lot more to come.

The Terras, who are fifth, will be hoping to get back to winning ways at the Wessex Stadium today (3pm) when they host Grays Athletic. Garry Hill's men have only claimed one point from their last four league games.

Purser said: "If you look at it from the point of view that this is the club's first time back in the Conference for 17 years we have got to be happy with the position we are in. But most of the players have been at League clubs and although we have done well, I think everyone has a lot of determination and believes we can do better than we are.

"We want to get in the play-offs and win things. There are a lot of winners in this team."

Of his side's recent form, Purser added: "When you look at the fact that we have only picked up one point from our last four league games it is disappointing but performance-wise we have been doing okay.

"We have obviously conceded a lot of bad goals but we have played some good football as well, and we feel we have got the players to turn it around. You do not become a bad team overnight and every side in this league will have a blip at some point."

As well as Grays, Weymouth will host Stevenage Borough and Exeter City this month and travel to Northwich Victoria.

Purser said: "There are a lot of strong teams in this league and we have got a few of them coming up but if we are going to do anything decent at this standard we have got to get results against those sides.

I don't think it fazes any of the boys and we are just all looking forward to the next game when we will go out again and try and do our best."

Purser, who spent a spell on loan at Eastleigh earlier in the season, missed most of the 2005-06 campaign due to an eye injury.

He said: "I am just happy to be playing again and doing my bit. Last year was frustrating and at the start of the season I was not in the team and went out on loan but I am back now, working hard, and I have just got to keep taking my chances by doing what I have been doing of late really."

Despite their recent dip in form, Weymouth's players have been remaining positive. Purser added: "Everyone has been pulling each other through, there has been no bad feeling, and everyone has had a smile on their face.

"We have a good bunch of lads here and everyone is pulling in the right direction. Okay our results of late have not been reflecting that but hopefully they will do soon.

"We had a great defensive record at the start of the season and it is about getting back to that standard. If we can balance that with scoring a few more goals then there is no way that we will not get in the play-offs."
