BRENDON King thought his men were fortunate to come away from Poole Town with a point yesterday afternoon.

The Dolphins had Steve Devlin and keeper Nick Hutchings both sent off in the fiery local derby, but they were still the better side as the Terras failed to find any sort of rhythm in front of a bumper Bank Holiday crowd of 1,053.

Leading 1-0 with an extra man, Weymouth should have seen the game out but instead they went 2-1 down before relying on a piece of brilliance from Luke Burbidge to get them out of jail with Poole reduced to nine.

King told Echosport: “We were poor and lucky to come away with a point to be honest. However, we did not lose the game and that was the important thing.

“It was a pretty scrappy match throughout and we failed to get it down and pass like we know we can.

“We were also really disappointed with the goals we conceded but we would have taken a point before the game and to take 10 from our first four is a fantastic start.”

Commenting on the major decisions in the encounter, King added: “As Steve Devlin came through he stamped down on Danny Clay, who has been left with stud marks down his shoulder and arm. “Devlin told Danny all the way through the first half that he was going to get him and I think the referee heard that.

“As for the keeper, he had just been booked, so to then clip the referee round the ear was just stupidity, and to be honest it probably cost Poole the three points.

“I also thought we had a couple of good penalty shouts. Matt Groves was taken down in the box and although he wasn’t going to score there was definite contact and it still should have been given.

“The boys have also said that one of their defenders handled the ball on the line towards the end following a corner.

“Whether the referee felt sorry for them for sending two of their lads off I do not know, but he still should be getting those decisions right.”

Despite both sides dropping their first points of the season, they remain at the summit of the Calor Southern Premier Division with Weymouth sitting above Poole on goal difference.

Next up for the Terras is a home clash against Cambridge City on Saturday (3pm).

*The Terras are set to hold an EGM at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Friday, September 6 to discuss the latest developments surrounding the club’s ongoing land dispute.
