DORCHESTER SECONDS 109 (1pt) lost to WEYMOUTH SECONDS 112-1 (20pts) by 9 wickets

WEYMOUTH romped to an emphatic derby day trouncing of rivals Dorchester at Redlands.

The visitors were inserted after losing the toss with the Seasiders looking to put their opponents under pressure from the off.

Seamer Mike Pearce struck in his third over when opener Pete Phillips (7) hit the ball firmly to Tim Guyett who took a sharp chance at point.

Fellow opener Rhys Cole survived a dropped catch off young Joe James, but after putting on 35 for the second wicket he was clean bowled by Graham Puckett for 19.

A steady procession of wickets then fell thanks to the usual tight bowling of Puckett (3-26), well-supported by off-spinner John Ryan, who claimed season’s best figures of 4-16 from seven overs.

The writing looked on the wall for Dorchester at 75-6 and although Pete Horne (14) and Tom Blair (14) added 25 for the seventh wicket, the visitors were all out for 109 in the 32nd over having arrived with only 10 men.

Only veteran Tony Foot (19) and Cole (19) reached double figures.

Weymouth never looked in any trouble chasing the runs with opener Tom England blasting 38 in an opening stand of 64 with skipper Andy Jarvis.

Cam Armfield (17no), re-appearing after a lengthy lay-off through injury, then proceeded to finish the job in only 24.3 overs with Jarvis unbeaten on 41.

“It’s always very pleasing to come out on top in these local derbies,” said Weymouth captain Jarvis.

“Dorchester were not as strong as when we lost to them back in June and I know they have been struggling to get 11 players each week, as we have.

“However, we still have to play to our potential and that’s exactly what we did. I thought our fielding and bowling was top notch and we then finished the job to pick up maximum points.

“Hopefully this win should put us in good stead for a tough last game at Portland, who will no doubt be very keen to avenge their earlier defeat by us.”
