TERRAS: Frustrated Weymouth boss feels let down by players
BRENDON King cut straight to the chase and accused his players of being a major let down following Saturday’s defeat to St Albans.
The Weymouth boss called for a big response following the humiliation at Stourbridge the previous weekend but instead his side delivered a spineless performance which almost left him speechless.
When asked for his thoughts after the 3-0 loss, an exasperated King told Echosport: “I’m disappointed.
“We set the stall out but once those players cross that line it is up to them and I expected a lot more than what they gave us.
“Once again it was nowhere near good enough and I feel massively let down.”
He continued: “When your confidence is low people tend to make more mistakes and it can be difficult, but the majority of these players are experienced enough to get out of that situation, so I don’t buy into that.
“There are just too many players that are not on it at the moment.
“You can carry one or two at this level but when you have six or seven off their game it’s always going to be hard work.
“St Albans are not the greatest team in the world but they did the basics well and kept putting the ball in the right areas, which made it difficult for us.
“We are just not doing that at present.
“The players know what is expected of them and to let people down like that was just unacceptable.”
The Terras travel to Hitchin Town tonight (7.45pm) and, unless King sees a dramatic change of approach from his squad, the writing could be on the wall for several players.
The beleaguered manager added: “Ultimately it is my responsibility. Football is a results driven business and I understand exactly why the fans feel the way they do.
“I put this squad together at the end of the day and that is why I am so disappointed.
“The board of directors backed me when I said I wanted to sign and retain these players and, like I said earlier, I just feel let down by them.
“It’s clear I have some big decisions to make and I know I have got to make them soon.
“We have got a game tonight and then I will have a few days to get it sorted.”
Dave Allen will return from suspension at Hitchin this evening but Jamie Symes (illness) and Luke Winsper (ankle) remain doubts.
The Terras now lie 15th in the Calor Southern Premier Division having picked up just nine points from their last nine league games.
