TERRAS: Weymouth sacking for King and Groves
THE board at Weymouth FC has sacked the management team of Brendon King and Matt Groves following a poor run of results.
Seven defeats in 10 league games has been the catalyst for the decision but there appears to be no one waiting in the wings to take over, with the vacant role set to be advertised.
Goalkeeper Jason Matthews will take charge of the side at Banbury on Saturday and will be assisted by Micky Greeno, Jake Richmond, Paul Maitland and Rex Buttle.
Club chairman Nigel Biddlecombe, who appeared to back King following Monday’s 3-2 loss at Hitchin Town, has released the following statement on behalf of the board: "Manager Brendon King and assistant manager Matt Groves have been relieved of their duties at Weymouth Football Club, following the recent run of poor results.
"Experienced goalkeeper, Jason Matthews, will become caretaker manager and will be assisted by Micky Greeno, Jake Richmond, Paul Maitland and Rex Buttle at Saturday’s fixture with Banbury.
"Weymouth Football Club will advertise for a new manager and – with Matthews agreeing to a short term arrangement – will take advantage of the time to ensure that the right person is appointed to the manager’s seat.
"On behalf of the board and supporters of the club I want to express our gratitude to Brendon and Matt for their efforts, often in difficult circumstances.
"We wish them both well for the future."
King has told Echosport that both him and Matt Groves are "bitterly disappointed" with the decision but understand its a results business.
