WEYMOUTH have clinched the signing of winger Niall Thompson, 21, from Torquay United, on a month's loan.

Thompson has spent a period on loan at Conference North side Worcester City this season and has appeared for the Gulls in the Football League.

Terras’ chairman Nigel Biddlecombe said: “This signing has been made possible by the generous donations given through the WFCSA Players’ Fund and, on behalf of the management and board of directors, our thanks go to everyone who has supported this initiative.

“We are hopeful that the paperwork will go through in time for Niall to be available for Saturday's visit to Chippenham Town.”

Meanwhile, the Terras will need to be at their best defensively on Saturday if they are to chalk up a fourth win on the spin in the Southern Premier Division (3pm).

The fourth-bottom Bluebirds may be winless in eight in the league but they are a tough nut to crack on their own patch, and possess two strikers that are capable of causing problems for any side.

Alan Griffin and ex-Terra Lee Phillips are both vastly experienced and between them have already netted 18 league goals this season.

Weymouth player-manager Jason Matthews told Echosport: “Chippenham is a tough place to go.

“The pitch is on a slope and they have got two good forwards in Lee Phillips and Alan Griffin, who we will need to get to grips with.

“If we can do that and win the midfield battle, we should come away with something because I am always confident we will score.”

Luke Winsper, (ankle) is a serious doubt for the trip to Wiltshire but Luke Burbidge is back fully fit and should start.

Bristol Rovers loanee Jake Green will also feature along with new signing Adam Kelly, who could make his debut.

Nathan Walker has gone out on loan to Dorchester Town for a month while Simon Evans, Kyle Critchell, Jamie Symes, Dave Allen and Mark Ford are all sidelined, either through injuries or illness.

Matthews added: “We had a good training session this week and things appear to be coming together now.

“Jake, Adam and George Rigg have all come in and we are beginning to get a bit of competition for places again, which is encouraging.”

The Terras currently lie 12th in the table, just three points adrift of the top eight with games in hand on all four of the teams above them.
