BOWLS: Three-way bid for Dorchester ace Voss

Dorset Echo: BUSY: Nick Voss, left, and Jamie Lockwood BUSY: Nick Voss, left, and Jamie Lockwood

DORCHESTER bowls star Nick Voss will be in for a hectic time at the National Championships in Melton Mowbray early next month.

Voss, 25, has qualified in the singles, pairs and fours, and just missed out in the triples when losing the area final on an extra end.

Alongside playing partner Jamie Lockwood, his campaign in Leicestershire starts with a first round pairs match against West Yorkshire’s Jeff Normanton and John Whiteley on April 4.

Lockwood would take great pleasure in going all the way to add an indoor pairs title to the outdoor crown he won with Martin Pavey in 2009.

Should they succeed in reaching the latter stages of the pairs, Voss and Lockwood would be straight in with the first round of the fours the next day, where they will be joined by Colin Gifford and Dean Curtis.

This quartet reached the nationals by virtue of a comprehensive 24-10 victory over Chawton Park, and their opponents at the finals will either be from Welford-on-Avon or Blackpool.

Not featuring in the triples will give Voss a welcome break to prepare for the singles, where he opens his campaign against Middlesex’s Lee Barber Progress in the singles appears to be a tough proposition should Voss see off Barber, with England internationals John Ottaway and Andy Thomson potential opponents in later rounds.

Voss has just completed a spell with the England Under-25 squad and his final game in the Home Series was in the company of Moonfleet ace and fellow junior international Martin Puckett.

England won the championship for the third year running with the Puckett and Voss rink winning all three of their games against Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

Voss has now sets his sights on making progress to the senior international ranks.

Good performances in Melton Mowbray next month could enhance his chances for future consideration.
