FOOTBALL: Off-colour Bees pay the penalty
BRIDPORT 1 WINTERBOURNE UNITED 2
TREVOR Senior found it hard to explain why his Bridport side were not at the races on Saturday, as a late penalty gave Winterbourne the three points at St Mary’s Field.
After a run of four successive games on the road without defeat, the Bees’ boss was looking forward to being back at home and the prospect of taking on a side below them in the table.
However, for some reason, the Bees never really hit their stride and the hosts struggled to produce anything of quality in the final third.
“After playing so well in the four games away from home I didn’t expect that,” said Senior. “We played well in the first half but it was all at a pedestrian pace and there was no real tempo to our game.
“Midway through the half they had three attempts at our goal in about 30 seconds. They hit the post with one and Sam Filkins made a good save from another.
“We got into some good positions at the other end but our delivery into the box was poor.
“I said at half-time that we needed to have more life about us and raise the tempo but they were the ones that went in front.
“The ball was in their box, we lost possession, they broke quickly through the middle and, although Sam got two hands to the shot, it dropped into the net.”
He continued: “We made it 1-1 from a corner. The first effort was kept out and Jamie Filkins pounced to force it in.
“I thought that might spur us into life but it didn’t, and we didn’t really get going all afternoon.
“Then with about 10 minutes left their player twisted and turned and got a shot in but Ryan Hayter was adjudged to have fouled him.
“They were unlucky not to get a penalty in the first half so they should have had one either way.”
Bridport host Brislington tom-orrow night (7.45pm) with Senior looking for a reaction to Satur-day’s disappointment.
He added: “It was a really good performance at Melksham last week but this week it was nowhere near that.
“It was just disappointing because we had a great chance of making some ground in the league after going unbeaten in four.
“The effort was there but it was all at a slow pace and our quality in the final third wasn’t good.
“Winterbourne were there for the taking so not to win was disappointing.”
