IN THEIR final league game of the season, Dorchester secured the County Mixed League Cham-pionship with a hefty last-match shot difference, which was mainly due to the excellent result on just one of the four rinks.

At Bridport, the club home rinks had a battle royale with the outcome uncertain until the completion of the final end.

The visiting Dorchester four – Frank Follis, Linda Hill, Eve Peavoy and David Bonnett trailed the Bridport four 14-6 at one stage and Bridport’s skip Sue Walsh seemed to be on course for a healthy win.

However, Dorchester had recovered to 17-19, with one end to go, which they won – but only by a single shot to lose out 19-18.

An equally close encounter took place on the neighbouring rink when David Caundle, Fran Dyer, Val Ferguson and John Dyer saw a 19-14 advantage disappear against Bridport’s Bob Taylor following the completion of the penultimate end, which left the scores level at 21 shots apiece.

A winning single to Dyer sec-ured the win. The aggregate score at Bridport was tied at 40-40.

The Dorchester home rink of John Hill, Ann Kay, Jill Bonnett and Barry Day did enough to overcome Brian Walsh and his Bridport quartet in a 19-15 success.

However, the decisive result was achieved by the other home quartet of Barry Hubbard, Jenny Langdon, Sue Lofthouse and skip Mike Lofthouse, who romped home by a near cricket score of 36 shots to nine to leave the Jenny Harding Bridport rink out of touch, and struggling to stay in the game.
