MOVING up the football pyramid is something “very much on the horizon” for Portland United according to chairman Robin Satherley, but changes at the club are needed if that is going to come to fruition.

Satherley, pictured, has told Echosport that the Blues will not be seeking a place in either the Wessex League or Western League for next season.

Portland sealed back-to-back Dorset Premier League titles this term and Satherley feels that representing the club at a higher standard is what the players deserve.

However, improvements to the islanders’ Grove Corner ground, and a refreshed look behind the scenes, are required first.

“Our floodlights need a major overhaul to start with,” he said.

“That is one of the major factors why we’re not looking to go into the Wessex League or Western League.

“It could happen in the future but we really want someone to get a grip of the club because the players deserve to play higher up.

“I know they are probably disappointed we haven’t gone up but we need a sounder financial base, though we have been doing very well lately.”

Satherley, who praised the management team and squad for their achievements this season, has again called for more help.

He added: “Playing in something like the Wessex League is very much on the horizon for the club but we’ve got to have everything in place first.

“We urgently need more committee members and maintenance work on the ground needs doing as well.”
