CONDITIONS were perfect for Weymouth Angling Society’s latest monthly shore match.

Anglers fished in the harbour from low water up and over the top of the tide. A variety of species were caught on the day including ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse, silver eel, thin-lipped mullet and thick-lipped mullet.

The winner, catching five good-sized eels was Pete Hegg, with a weight of 3.33kg; runner-up was Dave Lane with a ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse and five eels for 2.81kg.

In third place, with a thick-lipped mullet and a thin lip, for 1.56kg, was Phil Cheeseman and fourth was Ray Barnes with an eel of 490g.

Top junior on the night, with an eel of 300g, was Ethan Casey.

A silver eel won the best specimen, which was also the heaviest fish, weighing 1.05kg, caught by Dave Lane and netted by Ian Burden, who was a spectator at the time.

Boat League

THE Weymouth AS held their monthly boat league with the top angler on the night, fishing on his own boat Celastine, was Ray Goodwin with a total of 310 fish points.

Second place, with one less fish than Ray was Steve Goodwin with 300 points and in third place was Billy Short, who notched 205 points.

Short, who was fishing aboard Gypsy, had the best specimen with a cracking 106 per cent thornback ray.

Team League

THE shore team league was fished as a rover with some impressive catches.

Altogether 100 fish were registered for nine different species.

Top team on the day were the Chickerell Mafia, claiming all 13 points available by winning every category.

Runners-up were Kiss my Wrasse and Codfathers, both with six points.

Clam Spears followed with three points, while Snafu propped up the rest with one point.

Species caught included red and tub gurnard, wrasse, black bream, scad, dogfish and poor cod, but the outstanding fish was an undulate ray of 4.7kg, caught by Phil Cheeseman of the Chickerell Mafia.

This fish represents 103.63 per cent of specimen.

EIGHTEEN members of Weymouth AS entered and fished various marks around the Dorset coastline.
