PORTLAND Town paid their respects to the late Dave Price at the weekend, remembering a man who served the club with distinction before his death last week.

A minute’s silence was impeccably observed by the island club’s teams and their opponents before Saturday's matches.

And it was fitting that the side Price had only played for seven days earlier, Portland Town B, staged a brilliant comeback to win their Dorset Divisions 4 & 5 League Cup game at AFC Blandford Reserves.

Portland Town A drew 0-0 with Wool & Winfrith Reserves in the same competition, while Portland Town slipped to a 3-1 defeat at home against Broadstone in Dorset League Division Two.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time, the B team turned their contest on its head following a stern talking to by in-form striker Paul Cole.

Three goals in five minutes after the interval, Cole scored two and Jason Pearson got the other, was topped off by a fourth from vice-captain JJ Ogilvie.

Blandford did pull one back late on but Town held firm and dedicated the triumph to former team-mate Price.

Stand-in manager Paul White said: “Everything we did out there was for Dave.

“We all loved him dearly and there was no way we weren’t going to get that win for him.”

It was another emotional occasion at the BilliardsBoutique.com Bowl where the A team also mourned the sudden loss of Price.

The game started off brightly with both teams threatening to open the scoring, only to be rebuffed by great saves from the two keepers.

Town stopper Alex Butcher denied Wool in the second half and Shane Maguire’s vital goalline clearance kept the scores level.

The hosts upped their game in the last 20 minutes and Liam Puckett, James Duncan and Rob Evans all went close.

“Today was very emotional for everyone at the club,” said A team manager Ben White. “Dave was a great guy who loved the club and the game.

“He will be sorely missed and I do feel that despite lacking the final touch in front of goal we did Dave proud by getting what might be a valuable point come the end of the group stages.”
