DORCHESTER SPORTS 0 CHICKERELL UNITED 10

DEADLY Chickerell strike duo Josh Why and Warren White were on fire as Steve Coward’s men hit double figures against a stunned Dorchester Sports side.

The Chickens’ 10-0 win worked wonders for their goal difference, which could be a factor in determining the destination of the Dorset Senior League crown.

Holt still hold all the aces in the race for the title as they have a game in hand on the Chickens – Balti House top the table but finished their season more than three weeks ago.

Chickerell, in second, and third-placed Holt go again tonight when they visit Portland United Reserves and host Piddletrenthide Spartans respectively (6.30pm).

As for last Saturday’s result, Coward couldn’t have asked for more from his players, with Why scoring five times, White bagging a hat-trick and Nick Etherington and Pete Jarvis also on target.

“I really thought we’d be up against it against Sports,” said Coward.

“Apart from us and Balti, they are the only other side to have beaten Holt in the league this season.

“But they had played the previous Wednesday and looked really tired on Saturday, and we were excellent.

“It was a great performance from us and I was really pleased for the players.

“It was probably up there with the best performances that I have seen from a Chickerell side while I’ve been manager.”

Looking ahead to tonight’s match and the last two games, he added: “We needed to score goals on Saturday and we’ve got to do that again against Portland.

“It’s a big one for us tonight so we’ve just got to carry on from last weekend.

“All we can do is keep putting pressure on Holt and hope they fold.”

Dan Newnham is back in the Chickerell squad for the trip to Grove Corner.

Meanwhile, Coward has also thanked Chickerell chairman Martyn Hoare for putting on coach travel to next Tuesday’s Dorset Senior Trophy Final against Bridport Reserves at the County Ground in Hamworthy.

He said: “It is very generous of him. He is going to lay on one just for the players and two coaches for supporters.

"It’s great generosity. If someone from the area wants to come and watch us in a cup final then they can.”

The coaches will depart from the Lugger Inn at 6.15pm.
