Dorset Premier League Cup final.

PORTLAND UNITED 1 HAMWORTHY RECREATION 1 (aet, Hamworthy win 4-2 on pens).THE Blues suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak in the Dorset Premier League Cup final at Dorchester Town's Avenue Stadium last night.

Adam Linaker, who cancelled out Rob Webb's opener in the first half of normal time, and substitute Ryan Middleton both had their spot-kicks saved by Rec keeper Kev Leonard after their side had enjoyed more of the chances throughout the game.

Portland assistant manager Brendan King said: "We should have won it in normal time and I thought the lads were outstanding out there, every one of them.

"We said before the game that if they came in with no regrets having given everything then we could accept that and I think they did a bit more than that.

"Everyone watching could see we were the better side but it just did not happen for us. I could not see how the referee did not give us a penalty when John Lamb got tripped in the first half and the supporters on the touchline said that Adam Linaker's effort in extra-time crossed the line but the linesman was not up with play.

"Then one of their guys grabbed Andy Perkins around the throat and only got booked for it. He was the one who went on to score the winning penalty. Whether he should not have been on the pitch I do not know.

"But at the end of the day the lads gave us everything and the club can be proud of them."

The Blues should have taken the lead on 18 minutes. Lamb's pull back found John Litherland and when Linaker volleyed his cross across the six-yard box, Carl Mutch somehow lifted the ball over from four yards.

That seemed to energise Rec and two minutes later Portland keeper Paul Gadsby failed to deal with a cross, enabling Webb to open the scoring with a fine finish.

But United's disappointment did not last long. A clever flick by Lamb on 22 minutes sent Mutch down the right and when Reader touched his cross on at the near post in strolled the impressive Linaker to tap home.

Lamb's quick feet were a constant threat and on 32 minutes he cut into the box only to be tripped by a flailing Rec leg. The islanders appealed for a penalty but referee Mike Gawler waved play on.

Rec came out in the second half and went close through Mike Notley before Portland answered back with a header from Whyton that was expertly tipped over by Leonard on 61 minutes.

Portland began to enjoy more possession and they were unfortunate not to find a winner in normal time. Reader had an effort cleared off the line before Jason Thoday and Linaker both went close in the latter stages.

Extra-time began with another piece of quality by Linaker. The striker ran through and delicately lifted an effort over the sprawling Leonard but Darren Elmes recovered to the line to hook the ball clear. Notley then had a strike blocked by Gadsby moments later.

Lamb went close with a 20-yarder and Middleton had an effort blocked late on as Portland finished the stronger side but in the end penalties decided the result.
