ANOTHER successful and exciting season in the Weymouth & District League has now come to an end with last season’s Division One winners retaining their title in convincing fashion.

The Springfield A team of Thomas Babler, Steve Jackson, Craig Stanten and Andy Millar finished clear of nearest rivals Park District and had a near perfect record of 17 wins and one draw.

Babler also finished top of the averages, for those who played the whole season in the division, having only lost three matches.

In their inaugural season, Park District were the only team who looked like they could have upset the form book but the departure of Geoff Ware part way through the season seemed to coincide with a decisive downturn in results.

Park’s John Ryan did finish second in the ratings, notwithstanding Geoff Ware’s rating, and he will be looking to strengthen the team next season to challenge Springfield.

Budmouth teams had a great season with them filling the third, fifth and six places.

Budmouth C’s Will Jolliffe was top of their averages with Budmouth B’s Ben Graham and team-mate Jamie Blair just behind him.

All three teams will be looking to push on next season, with many of the youngsters also looking to represent their county in either the cadet or junior age groups.

Wyke A finished fourth with Sai Maganti topping their averages.

Red Triangle finished bottom of the division despite Derrick Dawson having more than a 50 per cent average.

Preston B sneaked the Division Two title by two points from Springfield B with the match between the two back in March ultimately being the difference.

Springfield were 18-14 up with two legs to play but Josh Harman’s 3-1 defeat of Gary Ayles and then his 3-0 doubles win with Peter Stopforth over Ayles and Paul Arnold pulled of a stunning victory.

Harman finished second in the averages for the division with Springfield’s Chris Whitefield just pipping him to top spot.

Shipton Gorge B secured a clear third place with Graham Albertella topping their averages.

Under the guidance of league chairman, Neil Hardisty, an inexperienced Budmouth D will be pleased with their fourth-placed finish.

In Tom Lydford and Eddie Knell it shows there is plenty of youth talent ready to come through.

The experience of Hardisty steered them to the extra points needed to finish just above Springfield C and Preston C.

In a very closely fought division, it was ultimately Wyke D that found it toughest and ended the season adrift at the bottom.

Tony Dobbs had a very respectable average at more than 60 per cent but it was not enough to avoid relegation.

Shipton Gorge C took the Division Three title by a convincing margin over Colliton C.

Dave Poole, Dan Corren, Graham Robinson and Tom Baldry all had averages at around the 70 per cent mark and this proved too consistent for others in the division.

Poole was actually third in the averages for the division with Wyke C’s Roy Sharp topping them with more than 80 per cent and Budmouth E’s ever-improving April Heasman just behind him on 79.

STEPS J just sneaked past Shipton Gorge Youth for third place with stalwart Paul Hammond topping their averages.

Youth will be pleased with their first season in the league and in particular Joachim Wood with his more than 60 per cent average.

STEPS M finished just above Pilgrims B in fifth with both Mike Hall and Richard Wood scoring well throughout the season.

The handicap cup was won by Budmouth B with a 6-3 win over Colliton X.

The league’s AGM takes place tonight at the Springfield Club. All players and officials are encouraged to attend.
