CHESELBOURNE 34 CHARLTON DOWN 35-3

GRAHAM Wild ran riot as he finished with club record figures of 7-3 in a devastating spell for Charlton Down.

With a full team, Charlton Down got back to winning ways at home in Division Two after a first-week narrow loss away to Stalbridge with a crushing win over newly-promoted Cheselbourne.

After winning the toss and putting in Cheselbourne, the miserly Charlton down attack of Matt Stevens, James Pretty Chas Duerdoth and Mark Homewood, along with some tight fielding, kept the Cheselbourne batsman to 26-2 after 20 overs at the drinks break.

Homewood and Pretty picked up a wicket each with no bowler going for more than 10 runs in their spell.

But the incredible was still yet to occur.

In the next 7.3 overs, Alex Campbell picked up a wicket but, at the other end, Wild devastated the visitors’ batsman.

In just 21 balls, Wild managed to dislodge opener Rob Dichol for 13 and then a procession of another six Cheselbourne batsmen.

Finishing with club record figures of 3.3-2-3-7, helped by a few poor shots, a smart catch at forward short leg by captain Sid Dunford and a smart stumping by keeping debutant Nick Voss, Wild was rightly applauded from the field.

The Charlton Down response started poorly after a wicket with the first delivery and they were three down inside two overs with Ed Nichols taking two wickets in his first over,

However, Voss and skipper Sid Dunford saw the team home inside nine overs with Voss remaining 21 not out and looking solid to back up his excellent keeping.

Dunford said: “The pressure exerted by the early bowling and fielding was incredible.

“We gave nothing away and, when the Cheselbourne batsmen looked to push on a little bit after drinks, Graham Wild didn’t give them an inch.

“To see figures of seven wickets for three runs is incredible and it was a privilege to be present.”
