Shipton Gorge’s B and C teams met in a top-of-the-table clash in Division Two and it was the B team that came out on top with a 25-15 victory.

Preston C are still looking for their first win of the season after losing 25-11 to fourth-placed Springfield C.

Greg Clarke top scored for Preston with six points but Steve Rook and Pete Anderson scored nine points apiece for Springfield.

Springfield are top of Division Three after their 23-14 victory over Wyke C. This was a highly entertaining night’s table tennis with some exciting matches.

The highlight was the five-set doubles, which Springfield took from 2-1 down. Veterans Roy Sharp (Wyke, 7) and David Moth (Springfield 9) produced some very tight and tense play and Mike Wood (Springfield, 4) won a splendid battle with Paul Robinson-Rowell (2), again coming back to win from 2-1 down.

Pilgrims B’s 25-14 victory over Budmouth E means they are second in the division.

The girls from Budmouth found it tough against the wily Pilgrims team but young Jaimee Browne (3) picked up another win in beating Richard Ellerby (6) 3-0.

Rosa McKechnie scored Budmouth’s other singles win in coming from two sets down to beat Barry Thomas (8) in five.

Browne and McKechnie also teamed up in the doubles to beat Thomas and Winship 3-2 in a good advert for the game.

The new-boys of Budmouth D proved too strong for Preston D, running out convincing 28-8 winners.

Budmouth’s Ben Howe (9) showed he had an old head on young shoulders as he coped well with the experienced Lynda Clegg (3) who in turn gained Preston’s only success when she defeated Noah Drummond (7) in a very close four-set match.

The match of the night saw Alex Taylor (9) achieve the narrowest of wins over Christine Roy (3) 12-10 in the fifth leg in a game that could have gone either way.

The match was not as one-sided as the score suggests but when legs were in the balance at 8-8 the boys seemed to find the extra gear.
