A NATIONAL League select side is set to battle in a women’s volleyball friendly at Redlands against a Weymouth side in July.

The select side will see players including Diane Schmidt and Carol Fogherty, while the Weymouth side will feature England junior players Ailsa and Ilona McDonald.

The friendly will also see top international referees Ray Capewell and Andy Worroll assist.

The duel will take place at Redlands on Monday, July 30 and will start with a warm-up before a best of five match will take place lasting either until the end or until 2.30.

A free training session will be held during the warm-up and the two best players will be invited to join in the match, with one either side.

Organiser Ian Loke said: “What we are really trying to do is get Women’s volleyball back into Weymouth. Most of these players are all London based and around that home county area but they can come down to Weymouth, put this exhibition on and say right you guys down here, form a feeder team, train for a year and we will look at getting you into national league.

He hopes that it can lead to to the revival of an indoor women’s volleyball team, which has not been seen in Weymouth since 2004/05.
