SHERBORNE 277-5 (7pts) lost to BERE REGIS 281-4 (17pts) by six wickets
BERE Regis executed a remarkable chase in boiling conditions to condemn bottom side Sherborne to a six-wicket loss in their error-strewn Dorset Funeral Plan Premier League battle at the Terrace.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sherborne laid a terrific platform as openers Ryan Monk and Lewis Channing put on 119 for the first wicket until the latter was bowled by Tim Goodhew (1-20).
Both openers had been dropped by Bere’s fielders and Sherborne continued to press as Roger Parfitt (31) helped Sherborne reach 188-1 before succumbing to the superb Jacob Kennard (2-43).
Monk (135), who impressively scored at nearly a run per ball, notched his century and motored on before becoming the second victim of Kennard as Sherborne raced to 259-3.
Emlyn Kuhn (51) had pushed the score along with three fours and three sixes while two late wickets for Rob Murphy (2-65) saw Sherborne set Bere an imposing 278 for victory.
Bere also made a solid start in their reply, the dependable Matt King batting well in tandem with Rich Payne (29). But Kuhn (1-68) struck to remove the latter and leave Bere on 67-1.
Both King and new man Murphy (56) scored 50s but Sherborne responded as home skipper Paul Hancock (2-66) dismissed the latter and Kennard to check Bere at 172-3.
King (96), who was struggling with dehydration during his innings, found a capable ally in Goodhew (72no), who took advantage of being dropped numerous times to guide Bere to victory after King had fallen agonisingly short of a century.
Speaking to Echosport after the clash, Bere Regis captain Rich Cole described the match as a “calamity of errors”.
He said: “I’m really pleased to put our demons from last week away.
“I suppose it was a calamity of errors. There were close to 20 catches dropped across both teams.
“We let them get a good start by dropping both openers, which didn’t put ourselves on the right foot, but they dropped Tim a good five times.
“On a hot day it got to a few people and meant the focus wasn’t quite there. It was who reacted best to it and I think Sherborne had an internal explosion.”
On his batsmen’s performances, Cole added: “(Tim’s) 70-odd was instrumental to us getting over the line. Matty had a great innings to the point where he threw up with dehydration.
“Tim took his opportunities and Rob played a clever knock.”
