DORCHESTER manager Steve Thompson admits he will be “open-minded” ahead of their opening pre-season trip to Saltash United tomorrow (3pm).

Thompson is set to cast his eye over the Magpies’ blend of trialists, non-contracted and contracted players against the Ashes, who play in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division.

The Magpies’ boss added that he is particularly keen to assess Dorchester’s fitness and attitude during the fixture.

He told Echosport: “I’ll be open-minded. I’ve got some players that were with me form last year but also some new ones.

“I don’t want anyone to play more than 60 minutes. It’s a challenge for people to go out and show that level of fitness and ability they’ve got.

“I don’t think it will be tactical, it’s just about showing fitness and attitude. You start your tactics when you know what you’re going to start with all season.”

Thompson also feels the result is relevant, believing it to foster a “winning mentality”.

He said: “I like the mentality of players that want to win a five-a-side in training. I do want a winning mentality, that has to be everywhere.

“I want to see that but not players going out and getting injured, hence not much game time. If you play too long, too early it can result in injury.”

Of the current Magpies’ squad, Aaron Rodriguez is out with a broken foot and Thompson is continuing his search for a goalkeeper and striker.

“The training has been good,” he said. “I would have liked to have a few more players in, but there’s still plenty of time before the season starts.

“I’ve been speaking to players and clubs. The players (at Dorchester) want to play football and they’re committed to the club in that respect.”
