WEYMOUTH ST Paul’s Harrier Kevin Archer stormed to his sixth win of the season at the England Athletics Masters Association Inter Area Challenge at Solihull.

Archer, competing in the men’s 60-69 classification, represented the south west in the 800m where he streaked clear to equal his season’s best in 2:25.80 and the men’s 65-69 lead time.

The result means Archer remains undefeated outdoors this campaign, with the veteran middle-distance runner admitting the race became a “time-trial”.

He told Echosport: “I just went off and my main rival (David Oxland) had already run the 1,500. They just let me go. Because I knew I was only doing the one race I wanted to get a reasonable time.

“It was like a time-trial in the end. It was very hot and I equalled the time that I did a couple of weeks ago. It’s a British lead at the moment, so I’m chuffed.”

But Archer revealed he again struggled with an ailment in the build-up to the event.

He said: After (Battersea) I did the Park Run in Weymouth in a reasonable time and I thought ‘this feels a bit hard’.

“For the first half of the week I was feeling a bit under the weather.

“I took my time to recover and pulled myself round. I felt great – I couldn’t grumble, really.”

Archer’s next main event is the British Masters Open Track and Field Championships in Birmingham on the weekend of Saturday, August 25.

In order to achieve peak condition for the meeting, Archer admitted he is aiming to seek smaller track events to maintain his fitness before August’s nationals.
