CHICKERELL UNITED 3

DORCHESTER SPORTS RES 1

CHICKERELL United earned a hard-fought derby victory over Dorchester Sports Reserves, with Shane James making amends for giving away a penalty by re-handing the Chickens the lead in the Dorset Senior League.

Goals from Nick Voss, Shane James and Nick Etherington ensured the home side went away with the derby spoils.

It was an even contest to start with, as both sides attacked well early on with the Chickens having particular joy down the left-hand side through Dylan Ellis.

It was from one of these runs that Chickerell found joy, when the ball managed to break to Voss.

Voss dropped a shoulder, got the ball on to his right boot before slamming the ball into the bottom left-hand corner to open the scoring after half an hour.

However, on the stroke of half-time James went to block a shot but kicked the player to hand the visitors a penalty, which was subsequently fired in by Steve Churchill.

The two sides went in at half-time at 1-1 but Chickerell came out on top, and regained the lead shortly after the interval.

Another break down the left-hand side earned a corner, which caused a scramble in the visitors’ box from which the ball came out to James who gratefully blasted in to hand the Chickens the lead, prompting big celebrations from his team-mates in light of giving away the penalty earlier.

The county town side did not stop there however, and nearly scored soon after.

A superb move down the right-hand side resulted in a brilliant shot that Chickens’ goalkeeper Ian Bickerstaff did very well to hold.

Shortly after, in the 70th minute, a cross from the right-hand side allowed Etherington to get a great looping header over the top of the Dorchester goalkeeper to confirm the victory for the Chickens.

Chickerell manager Shaun Murphy said: “It was a very good result, we are obviously really happy.

“It was a good reaction after our defeat the week before. They did what was asked basically.

“It was very tricky, wet conditions.

“They were a better side than they were last year definitely, it was a good derby game.”

Murphy had no qualms with the spot-kick being awarded, saying that it was a definite penalty.

Chickerell are next in action when they travel to Allendale (3pm) on Saturday.

Chickerell: Bickerstaff, James, Rogers, Daniels, Coles, Ellis (Heath 70), Harvey, Welch, Sandeman (McCarthy 65), Etherington, Voss
