WEYMOUTH goalkeeper Jason Matthews is glad to be back in manager Jason Tindall's "good books."

The 32-year-old lost his place to youngster Jon Stewart towards the end of September but has since won it back and is now looking forward to helping the Terras move up the Blue Square Premier table.

Matthews said: "Losing my place was very frustrating because I want to play every game and I am not good at sitting on the side.

"After the first week I was left out I got ill as well which did not help but after that I just got my head down, worked hard and kept waiting for my chance.

"I thought Jon did very well when he came in. He kept three or four clean sheets and there is no doubt that he has got a lot of good attributes. As long as he keeps his head down I think he has a bright future in the game.

"I do a little bit of training with the other keepers at the club. We do a 20-minute warm-up before joining all the other lads and I have a good relationship with Jon. We get on really well and as much as I want to play myself I also want to see him do well."

Matthews' return to the side came in the 2-1 home defeat against York City in which he produced several top-class saves to win the man-of-the-match award.

He said: "I have had a couple of good games since I came back in but to be honest I wasn't really disappointed with my form before I lost my place.

"I did not come for a cross at Torquay United and really that cost me. I had to wait six or seven weeks to get back in but that is the way it is now at all Conference clubs.

"All the teams have two good goalkeepers nowadays and it is all about taking your chance when it comes along and fighting for your place.

"I do not want to be anywhere else but at Weymouth and that has always been the case, and I am just glad to be back in Jason Tindall's good books."

The Terras are currently sitting in 19th spot but Matthews is confident they will begin moving away from the drop-zone in the coming weeks.

He said: "We have been playing the youngsters to give them experience because that is the only way they are going to improve and they have shown a lot of potential but we have got to now start finding some consistency.

"It would be fair to say that we have been a nearly side so far this season. We have played well in a lot of games but have not always come away with what we have deserved.

"Losing several of our more experienced players to injury all at the same time did not help but they are now back fit and at the moment our squad is looking strong again.

"We are confident we can get out of the position we are in and start moving up the table. We have two games in-hand on a lot of the teams below us and above us and if we can win them we should begin advancing towards mid-table."

The Terras' club shop will be open tomorrow and December 21 between 7pm and 8pm. The shop is also open during the day. To find out more go along to the main office or call the club on 01305 785558.
