WEYMOUTH 3

RICHMOND 0

WEYMOUTH Beach Volleyball Club’s incredible season in National League Division One continued with a 3-0 defeat of Richmond at Redlands.

Victory ensures the Seasiders remain top of the table, extending to four games their unbeaten run.

Roared on by their biggest crowd of the season, Weymouth came racing out of the blocks and, helped by powerful serving by Ryan Stout that Richmond struggled to control, went into a 12-3 lead.

Weymouth kept up this fast-paced attack throughout the set and Richmond had little answer as Weymouth raced to a 25-14 win.

Weymouth continued in the same fashion in the second set, dominating the play particularly with powerful outside hitting from Liam Tewkesbury and Zoltan Hegedus which Richmond were unable to defend against.

Weymouth led throughout the set to take a 25-19 win and a 2-0 set lead.

Going into the third set, Weymouth, aware that in recent matches that they had let the intensity of their play drop at this point, looked as though they were falling into the same trap as Richmond led 10-9.

However, unlike in previous weeks, Weymouth did not let Richmond pull away and good distribution by setter Ryan Stout combined with good opposite and middle hitting by Darren Harding, Sam Groom and Seb Smith meant Weymouth were able to come roaring back to reclaim the lead.

Richmond, however, were not going to concede defeat easily and battled hard to stay with Weymouth. It needed some crucial power hits by Liam Tewkesbury to give Weymouth a deserved 25-22 win to take the match.

Weymouth now have two tough away matches against Dark Star Derbyshire next Saturday and then Coventry Riga the following week.

If they can keep the unbeaten run going in these two matches, it will set up two decisive home matches back at Redlands against the two other top sides in London Aces and Stockport on Saturday, March 25 and Saturday, April 1 respectively.

However, Weymouth do have selection problems with Stout, Hegedus and Matta Hunter all being unavailable next weekend.
