TORRINGTON 1

BRIDPORT 2

BRIDPORT continued their fine start to the new South West Peninsula League Premier East season with a 2-1 victory at Torrington.

Chris Herbst’s men have now taken two wins in their opening two games and sit in the lofty heights of third place in the embryonic table.

The Bees fired an early chance wide but both teams struggled in the windy conditions.

And away keeper Jordon Scadding had to be alert to keep out a 40-yard swerver as Bridport defended against the wind.

Brad Rowe nodded a near-post chance over but it was not until the second half that Bridport found their shooting boots.

Their opening goal came on the hour mark from a corner as James Cox picked up space 25 yards out and blasted a magical finish into the bracket of the goal.

Sub striker Callum Arnold had Bridport’s next chance, although he turned down the shot and opted to find Tom Richardson who missed the opportunity as Torrington closed him down.

Torrington were limited to half-chances, with Scadding not called upon to make a major save, the keeper able to watch several shots fizz wide.

Bridport made sure of victory five minutes from time when Ryan Leader surged down the left on a solo run and offloaded to Kieren Daniels.

Daniels took a touch and whipped in a devilish ball into the area where Arnold was waiting to head home for 2-0.

But Torrington deprived Bridport of a clean sheet with George Nancekivell’s 93rd minute consolation, although the Bees saw out the remaining seconds to book another victory.

Herbst said: “It was a very difficult game, they’re certainly better than last year.

“The conditions played a part. We defended the wind first and then attacked it in the second because we thought they’d be tired and it panned out like that.

“We dominated but didn’t create much, so the goals we scored counted big style.”

Bridport travel to Sidmouth Town for a derby on Tuesday night (7.30pm).

Bees: Jo Scadding, Cox, Baggs, Daniels, King, Leader, Parsons (Owen 73), Weedon, Brook, Richardson (Diaz 84), Rowe (Arnold 56).
